16th July 2017 Christ Church, Davyhulme

After 6 months of hard work on the Community Garden at Christ Church in Davyhulme it was time to celebrate and on 16th July a Celebration Lunch and Open Afternoon was organised by the IDEA team. The events were very well attended with over 50 local people and volunteers taking an opportunity on a sunny day to enjoy the transformed garden.

The renovation was made possible by a generous grant of £3k from United Utilities and the support of many people. Back in February, staff from Laing O'Rourke came to the site for a day to start clearing the brambles and since then many hours of volunteer time has gone into making the garden a place where folk of all ages can enjoy peace and quiet. In addition the raised beds and polytunnel provide growing facilities for those interested in growing crops.

Staff from Groundwork, the community environmental charity, supervised the project on behalf of United Utilities and have also used the community garden for training days for local people keen to improve their gardening skills.

Terry Morford, chair of IDEA, commented, ‘With the tremendous support we have received over the past six months we have realised our ambition to complete the garden and make it a tranquil haven in this corner of Manchester. Thanks to United Utilities and all who have helped us.’
